Another huge benefit of learning song lyrics is that many songs are also cultural touchpoints.Learning the lyrics to Je Suis Malade, for instance, will show French speakers you understand the emotional register of francophonie. I also learned a lot from pop songs by Louane and Amir!
This is fabulous, thank you! I love making playlists to help with Spanish but I haven’t ever tried to find the right songs in French. (When I was at school I remember spending many hours with my cassette player and a pen trying to decipher the French lyrics in Blondie’s Sunday Girl 😊.)
In 1963 Heinrich Böll, the German Nobel Prize-winning author, wrote a short story with an austere-sounding title. Anekdote zur Senkung der Arbeitsmoral (Anecdote on Lowering the Work Ethic) was about an encounter between a fisherman happy to spend his afternoons lying around and a tourist encouraging him to work harder and get richer. Now Böll’s parable has become a song that was among the hits of the summer in France. Manon Lisa, 39, the French singer-songwriter who put it to music, describes Le Petit Pêcheur as an “ode to idleness”. The lyrics, including the line “J’aime, j’aime quand la vie est facile” (I love, I love it, when life is easy), appear to be resonating in a country where disaffection with work has grown in recent years, polls suggest. Despite receiving little mainstream media interest when it was released in February, the song has now been streamed millions of times and has had an impact on social media as well as in primary school classrooms, Lisa said. “I have had an enormous amount of messages from teachers saying they have taught the song in class,” she told TF1, France’s biggest television station. Her hit, which is spoken in a slam poetry style, features a fisherman who only works in the mornings because “for him happiness is being with his family” and a businessman who urges him to “build an empire” by working ceaselessly. After being told that wealth would allow him to relax and enjoy life, the fisherman replies: “But that’s exactly what I’m doing.” Lisa has written songs for other artists, including Céline Dion, but had never before found fame herself.
